GN-SEC network highlighted as success story in the new UN SDG-7 report

The UN policy compilation report “Accelerating SDG-7 Achievement” highlights the centres of the Global Network of Regional Sustainable Energy Centres (GN-SEC) as “success story” and an important contribution to accelerate the uptake of integrated and inclusive sustainable energy technology markets particularly in LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS. Moreover, in its key messages the report says:

Strengthening cooperation at the regional and sub-regional levels is critical to address different areas, unique challenges, and to promote innovation, investment, enhance cross-border connectivity, capacity building, south-south cooperation and synergetic actions to advance energy, climate change, environment and other SDGs simultaneously.

This stock-taking report is being issued at the midpoint of the UN Decade of Sustainable Energy for All 2014-2024 with the aim of also informing a series of intergovernmental discussions this year, including the SDG Summit, Secretary-General’s Climate Action Summit, Mid-term Review of the Samoa Pathway and Mid-term Review on the Implementation of the Vienna Programme of Action for Landlocked Developing Countries.

The policy compilation focuses on the links between SDG-7 and the SDGs under review at the upcoming High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in July: SDG 4 on quality education, SDG 8 on decent work and economic growth, SDG 10 on reduced inequalities, SDG 13 on climate action, SDG 16 on peace, justice and strong institutions, and SDG 17 on partnerships.

This year’s High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) in July represents another opportunity to strengthen interlinkages between SDG 7 and other SDGs. The meeting of the high-level political forum on sustainable development in 2019 convened under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council, will be held from Tuesday, 9 July, to Thursday, 18 July 2019; including the three-day ministerial meeting of the forum from Tuesday, 16 July, to Thursday, 18 July 2019.
