The Energy Branch of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the SIDS Sustainable Energy and Climate Resilience Initiative (SIDS DOCK), the Global Forum on Sustainable Energy (GFSE), the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) are organizing the side event “Energizing the SAMOA Pathway – Launch of the SE4ALL Network of Regional Sustainable Energy Centres for Small Island Developing States (SIDS)”.

United States President Barack Obama became the first sitting president to visit Jamaica in more than 33 years with a visit to Jamaica this week. Obama arrived on Wednesday for short meetings with US Embassy staff, although he made a late-night visit to the Bob Marley Museum that evening. On Thursday, Obama met with a group of CARICOM Prime Ministers for what was billed as a CARICOM-US Summit.

Jamaican Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, Phillip Paulwell says there needs to be a cohesive effort by Caricom Member States if the Region was to successfully develop sustainable energy.

At the special Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) meeting held on Wednesday, at Caricom Secretariat, Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown, Minister Paulwell stated the development of new energy policies should not be retrogressive and leave countries still heavily dependent on oil.
