BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (BGIS) -- A Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency is to be established in Barbados, said minister with responsibility for energy, Senator Darcy Boyce, when he met with Paolo Serpi, Italy’s special envoy to the Caribbean, on Monday.

The Thirty-Sixth Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), held at Bridgetown, Barbados, 2-4 July 2015, endorsed the establishment of the "Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE)" as the implementation hub for sustainable energy activities and projects within the region.

The Pacific Islands will soon have a regional centre of excellence in renewable energy and energy efficiency to support efforts to accelerate the adoption of feasible renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies across the region.

The hosting arrangement for the centre is being discussed this week at the Vienna Energy Forum being held by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) in Austria from 18 to 20 June.

The Energy Branch of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the SIDS Sustainable Energy and Climate Resilience Initiative (SIDS DOCK), the Global Forum on Sustainable Energy (GFSE), the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) are organizing the side event “Energizing the SAMOA Pathway – Launch of the SE4ALL Network of Regional Sustainable Energy Centres for Small Island Developing States (SIDS)”.
